Abstract

This paper analyses the average hourly wage deviation between male and female private-sector employees in France in 1992. It uses a breakdown that considers wage differences both within and between job categories. The wage deviation between men and women is due for the most part to average wage differences for one and the same category of job. The deviation has little to do with differences in individual characteristics. We also show that the female job structure would change enormously, although the average wage deviation would barely be affected, if the breakdown of female jobs followed male determinants.
