The “meso” dimension of territorial capital: Evidence from Italy

This paper investigates the meso dimension of the Italian territorial capital. Multivariate explorative analysis was carried out on Italian municipalities using several original statistical indicators. We detected two latent dimensions on which three clusters of municipalities were identified: the prevalence of cultural endowments and typicality, the prevalence of environmental and natural endowments, and the prevalence of other endowments. These clusters were then used for analytical purposes, crossing demographic and socio‐economic variables. The results showed that some elements of “‘disadvantage,” such as poor accessibility, can, in reality, represent strengths, provided that such an endowment is exploited in sectors that can benefit from it, such as, for example, culture and tourism. Este artículo investiga la mesodimensión de la capital del territorio italiano. Se realizó un análisis exploratorio multivariante en municipios italianos utilizando varios indicadores estadísticos originales. Se detectaron dos dimensiones latentes sobre las que se identificaron tres grupos de municipios: la prevalencia de las dotaciones culturales y la tipicidad, la prevalencia de las dotaciones ambientales y naturales, y la prevalencia de otras dotaciones. Estos grupos se utilizaron luego con fines analíticos, mezclando las variables demográficas con las socioeconómicas. Los resultados mostraron que algunos elementos considerados como “desventaja”, como la mala accesibilidad, pueden, en realidad, representar fortalezas, siempre que esa dotación se explote en sectores que puedan beneficiarse de ella, como por ejemplo la cultura y el turismo. 本稿では、イタリアの各地域の中心都市のメソ次元を検討する。イタリアの自治体について、複数の独自の統計指標を用いて探索的多変量解析を行った。2つの潜在的次元が発見され、そこから自治体の3つのクラスター、すなわち文化的資質と典型性が優勢な地域、環境的資質と自然的資質が優勢な地域、その他の資質が優勢な地域が確認された。これらのクラスターを分析目的に用い、人口統計学的変数と社会経済的変数を交差した。結果から、アクセスの悪さなどの「不利」な要素は、例えば文化や観光などの恩恵を受けるセクターでそうした資質が活用されれば、実際には強みとなり得ることが示された。
