Abstract

Renewable energy technology is one of the alternative solutions to reduce the carbon emission and global warming potential. In the renewable energy, wind and solar cell power are the best methods to produce the power. But the efficiency of the systems is low compared to the conventional method. This research constraining on wind power particularly studying the horizontal wind turbine and its efficiency, where wind turbine is considering as a very important method to convert the kinetic energy of wind to electricity power for mankind benefit. Ordinary wind turbine has a design point which means that the turbine will not achieve its best efficiency until the wind velocity reaches the designed point, in other words, the turbine will not be able to convert maximum amount of wind energy if the wind velocity lower or higher the design point, however, wind turbine cost a lot and the outcome doesn’t make this cost reasonable. This research searching for untraditional solutions to increase wind turbine efficiency. The concept of smart wind turbine blade with changeable surface model is a new method to increase wind turbine efficiency, previously all increasing wind turbine efficiency attempts constraining on increasing the size of the wind turbine or increasing the tower high where we see weight against the efficiency in other hand, other challenges of maintenance and the dramatically increases of cost are apparent. Using smart blade models with changeable surface will create a new paths of increasing wind turbine efficiency. During this research two smart blade models have been analyzed and the results shows that the both blade models able to increase power extracted from wind.
