e-Tracking COVID-19 Disruptions to the Global Development Agenda on Land

Abstract

Investigations into the outbreak of COVID-19 or Coronavirus has rapidly evolved in the aspects of information update on deaths and casualties, and the search for medically certified preventive and curative measures. One aspect that remains poorly explored is its disruption to global land (and natural resources) discourse for achieving global sustainable development. This study addresses this gap by conducting a retrospective e-content analysis of social media vignettes posted on Twitter between 1st February and 31st May 2020, to analyse its disruptions to the global land and related issues. It makes four crucial revelations. (1) The COVID-19, like earthquakes and volcanoes, is a viral disaster which has caused disruptions to the global discourse on land. (2) It has led to new land information that provides evidence that health issues have a qualitative relationship to land issues.
