This paper examines the evolution of the structure of production and factor productivity in Portuguese manufacturing industry between 1990 and 1999. In order to calculate marginal productivities and production elasticities of the productive factors: labour, capital and materials, we based our analysis in the estimation of a translog production function for 1990 and 1999. The production of the manufacturing industry grown up about 16,8%, only with a negative contribution of the Textiles sector. The growth rate of the Metallic Products was about 50%, which could point out a positive result of the industrial policy, with a greater value added and some modification on the Portuguese industrial base. For the manufacturing industry as a whole the results reveal a decrease in the marginal productivity and capital contribution of 54,7% and 65.38%, respectively. This evolution is in accordance with the decrease in the firms’ revenues. On the other hand, labour productivity and labour contribution have increased about 5% and 9%, respectively. This increase is possibly related to the rise in the real wages. As for the materials, there was a positive evolution in its contribution but the increase in productivity was not impressive which raises questions in relation to its productivity efficiency. However, separate analysis for four different industrial sectors revealed that the factors’ productivity evolution was not equal for all the industrial sectors.
