Earnings Disparities in Unified Germany: Nominal versus Real

Abstract

Nominaleinkommensdaten werden sowohl in politischen Debatten als auch in der ökonomischen Forschung häufig verwendet. Jedoch sollten für Wohlfahrtsvergleiche und Überprüfungen von ökonomischen Theorien reale – d.h. preisniveaubereinigte – Einkommen verwendet werden. Diese Arbeit enthält Evidenz über die Lebenshaltungskosten in deutschen Bundesländern. Diese Daten werden verwendet, um reale Einkommen zu berechnen. Anschließend werden die nominalen und die realen Einkommen und ihre Entwicklung von 1993 bis 2002 miteinander verglichen. Es wird gezeigt, daß die regionale Variation der realen Einkommen viel geringer ist als diejenige der nominalen Einkommen und daß nominale Einkommen in ökonomischen Anwendungen ein schlechter Ersatz für reale Einkommen sind.
