Disability and determinants of schooling: A case from Bangladesh

Abstract

Using the nationally representative dataset of Bangladesh and utilizing the fixed effects and logit model techniques, the determinants of school participation between children with and without disabilities are examined. In the analysis of total samples, it is observed that while disability is negatively correlated with school participation, once the sample is restricted to disability only, results show that monthly expenditure and working age members are positively correlated with the probability of school participation. Besides raising awareness, results suggest the importance of disability-inclusive poverty reduction strategies to mitigate the poverty of households towards increasing access to education for children with disabilities.
