Prestación de Servicios Bancarios en las Cajas de Ahorros Españolas: Cajeros Automáticos versus Oficinas

The aim of this paper is to analyse the effect of automatic teller machines on the productivity, costs and profitability of the Spanish savings banks. After describing the importance of ATM in the Spanish payment system, the paper analyses the effects of ATM on the savings banks sector using partial correlations between the ATM intensity use, measured by the number of ATM per branch, productivity and profits of the savings banks in 1986- 1992 period.Because of the fact that the previous analysis does not take into account the influence of other important factors, we estimate a translog cost function in which ATMs and branches are sustitutes in the supply of services associated with the banking deposits. Based on that estimation and using the scope economies concept, the possible costs saving as a consequence of using ATMs and branches simultaneously in the supply of banking services is contrasted. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la repercusión que la utilización del cajero automático ha tenido en la productividad, los costes y la rentabilidad de las cajas de ahorros españolas. Tras realizar una descripción de la importancia del cajero automático en la oferta de servicios de pago de la economía española, el trabajo analiza los efectos que el cajero ha tenido en las cajas de ahorros españolas utilizando correlaciones parciales entre la intensidad del uso del cajero, medido a través del número de cajeros por oficina, la productividad, los costes y los beneficios de las cajas de ahorros en el periodo 1986-1992. Dado que el análisis anterior no controla la influencia que otras variables pueden tener en los aspectos considerados (productividad, costes y rentabilidad), se estima una función de costes translogarítmica en la que los cajeros y las oficinas bancarias entran como sustitutos en la prestación de servicios asociados a los depósitos bancarios. En base a dicha estimación se constrasta, recurriendo al concepto de economías de alcance, el posible ahorro en costes como consecuencia de la utilización conjunta de cajeros y oficinas en la prestación de servicios bancarios.
