La démocratie comme fondement institutionnel d'un " capitalisme raisonnable ": lecture croisée de J.R. Commons et J. Dewey

Abstract

Nous mettons en avant les proximités fortes de Dewey et Commons sur leur philosophie sociale, leur éthique démocratique et leur visée réformiste ; ces proximités étant ancrées dans la conception de l'enquête sociale portée par le pragmatisme de Dewey dans laquelle Commons se place. Au-delà de ces proximités fortes et évidentes qui apparaissent à la lueur d'une lecture croisée, on peut aussi mettre en évidence l'apport de la problématique du capitalisme raisonnable (ancrée dans une théorie des valeurs raisonnables) et des programmes réformistes conçus par Commons (avec une "machinerie" institutionnelle concrète) à la pensée deweyienne de la démocratie. On peut défendre que Commons étend la philosophie pragmatiste de la démocratie de Dewey, du domaine social général au domaine de l'économie, du niveau philosophique au niveau institutionnel.
