Égalité professionnelle entre les femmes et les hommes en France : une lente convergence freinée par les maternités

Abstract

En France depuis les années 1970, la croissance de la population active a été en grande partie tirée par la croissance de la participation des femmes au marché du travail et le fait qu'elles interrompent moins souvent leur carrière après la maternité. Leur niveau d'éducation s'est aussi considérablement élevé, et elles sont en moyenne, depuis les années 1990, plus diplômées que les hommes. Mais ces évolutions ne se traduisent pas par le rapprochement des rémunérations des femmes et des hommes que l'on aurait pu attendre : l'écart moyen des salaires horaires dans le secteur privé reste autour de 20 % depuis le milieu des années 1990. Dans cet écart moyen la part expliquée par les différences de capital humain (diplôme, expérience) s'est annulée et même inversée entre 1968 et 2015. La persistance de l'écart salarial apparait aujourd'hui principalement liée aux conséquences des maternités. L'arrivée d'un enfant entraîne pour les mères des pertes de rémunération annuelle largement liées à des ajustements sur leur temps de travail. Cette pénalisation est plus forte pour les mères dont le salaire se trouve dans le bas de la distribution des salaires.
