Abstract

Cartagena de Indias, located in the Colombian Caribbean coast, and capital of Bolívar department, is currently going through a defining moment in its economic history. Two of its key sectors are initiating important projects: the existing oil refinery, with and expansion and modernization of its facilities, and the port, ranked as the best one of the Colombian Caribbean, with an expansion to increase capacity and efficiency. Nevertheless, compared to the economic activity, poor improvements are shown regarding social indicators in the city. While Cartagena shows one of the highest tax revenues´ annual growth rates, the city is also on the top rank of poverty and inequality. In this paper I focus on the most recently conducted investments in Cartagena, as well as the impact on socioeconomic indicators. I also present the future perspective of the city and how local authorities and entrepreneurs see themselves contributing to the forthcoming challenges.
