From Boom to Bust — and Back? The Crisis of Growth in the Middle East and North Africa

Abstract

Despite the current growth crisis in the Middle East and North Africa, the historical picture contains both positive and negative elements. In the past the region as a whole outperformed all other regions except East Asia in both per capita income growth and equality of income distribution. But the cycle of economic expansion followed by contraction — boom and bust — was more pronounced in the Middle East and North Africa than in other regions.
