Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the referendum authorization procedures for referendums in the Council of Europe. This overview builds primarily on the LIDD database, and its aim is to show the general trends in referendum authorization procedures, including the number of referendums held in the Council of Europe member states, the type of limits imposed on referendums and the institutional choices for authorizing referendums. The trends are visualized through tables and graphs.
