Building integrated photovoltaics

Abstract

Integration of renewable energy technologies in the built environment is expected to play a crucial long-term role in the decarbonisation of urban areas. Despite recent techno-economic advancements in the solar energy sector, the diffusion of building integrated photovoltaic systems has been negligible. Deployment of such technologies poses significant challenges to the existing power grid infrastructure and well-established practices in the construction sector, and requires the successful cooperation of a diverse set of individuals including planners, architects, engineers, scientists and users. Acknowledging the complex nature of the building integrated photovoltaic innovation system, this chapter employs a multi-method approach in order to collect empirical evidence at different levels, including intra-firm case studies, industry-level analysis of business strategies and interviews with key stakeholders from the energy and construction sectors. The analysis highlights the importance of assessing internal innovation dynamics in tandem with broader socio-technical transitions, and provides insights regarding the governance of the innovation process in hybrid sectors.
