E-Learning Management Systems in Higher Education: Features of the Application at a Chinese vs. European University

The research paper aimed to identify current trends in the use of learning management systems (LMS) in the European Union countries and China and identify the most beneficial functions of the technology that can influence the decision on the systematic use of LMS in the educational activities of a university. The features of the European and Chinese choice of LMS tools that contribute to the organization of educational practices online are demonstrated based on data on websites applying LMS technologies in the EU countries and China using the BuiltWith service. The most popular platforms for organizing today’s learning activities in the online environment are identified. The functionality of the most popular learning management systems within the European and Chinese choices is also described. In addition, regional differences in attitudes toward learning management systems were identified through a survey of 127 respondents, higher education administrators, and educators from universities in the EU and China. With the Fs-QCA3.0 software, eight configurations were defined to use the LMS in the university’s educational activities and to limit its use. The statistical data analysis has revealed the peculiarity of the digital orientation of the Chinese education system, which is focused on developing digital campuses and creating a centralized system of influencing students’ progress at all stages of education. At the same time, the digital orientation of the European education system aims at creating a universal and accessible online learning environment with open learning opportunities.
