Abstract

(Using the example of job centre employees, our paper draws on survey data to analyse the effects of New Public Management (NPM) governance on the experiences of employees. The attitudes of employees are conceptualised from a stress theoretical perspective on the basis of the job gratification crisis model. Using the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), our analysis shows that job centre employees experience high levels of stress compared to other professional groups. Multivariate analysis shows that the high level of stress experienced by them is linked to the amount of emotional work involved in their jobs and the governance of NPM in job centres.)
