Une nouvelle approche de la technique du survivant

Abstract

[eng] A new approach to the survivor technique . First, this article shows that the conventional use of the survivor technique to estimate the economies of scale does not comply with the concept of survival of plants or firms of optimal sizes, but refers to their accumulation in the optimal size classes. Then, two new approaches are shown, ane of which strictly compiles with the survivor principle and can be connected with the growth processes put forward by Hart and Frais and by Ijiri and Simon. The assumption put forth by the author is that only the principle of accumulation of plants and firms into the optimal sizes, on which rests the conventional technique, allows to estimate the économies of scale, whereas the technique based on the survival principle allows only to verify whether the optimality of size is a major element in the survival of the plant or of the firm. Thid assumption is applied to the study of the development of firms of the french Boot and Shoe industry. [fre] Cet article montre d'abord que l'utilisation traditionnelle de la technique du survivant pour estimer les économies d'échelle n'obéit pas au concept de survie des établissements ou des entreprises de taille optimale, mais se réfère à leur accumulation dans les classes de tailles optimales. Il est alors présenté deux nouvelles approches dont l'une obéit strictement au principe du survivant et peut être reliée aux processus de croissance proposés par Hart et Frais et par Ij'iri et Simon. L'hypothèse avancée par l'auteur est que seul le principe de l'accumulation des établissements ou des entreprises dans les tailles optimales, sur lequel repose la technique traditionnelle, permet d'appréhender les économies d'échelle, tandis que la technique fondée sur le principe du survivant ne permet que de vérifier si l'optimalité de la dimension est un élément essen­tiel de la survie de l'établissement ou de l'entreprise. Cette hypothèse est ap­pliquée à l'étude de l'évolution des entreprises de l'industrie française de la chaussure.
