Abstract

This paper investigates the hydraulic superposition of hybrid pumped storage system (HPSS) considering successive load rejections (SLRs) under generation and hydraulic short circuit (HSC) modes. Firstly, the HPSS model and control strategy are given to control water hammer pressure of SLRs under two modes. Then, the concept of conversion rate of water kinetic energy is proposed. Superposition mechanisms of water hammer pressure are revealed. Finally, based on the operation modes, unit types and unit sequences under SLRs, comparisons of hydraulic superposition are analyzed. The results show that the hydraulic superposition of two units under generation mode is mainly affected by the conversion rate of water kinetic energy and transmitted wave, respectively. Dominant factor for both units under HSC mode is transmitted wave. Based on different operation modes and units, the peak values of dominant factor correspond to the most favourable and unfavourable superposition times. Influencing factors of conversion rate of water kinetic energy include the position of steady state point and superposition time. The steady state point is related to the discharges of units. By changing the operation modes, unit types and unit sequences, the coupling effect of discharges between units is changed to affect the steady state point.
