Abstract

Various noises, from voltage fluctuations across electronic devices to biological processes such as DNA base sequences, display the signature of 1/f noise. The ubiquity might imply the existence of a general mechanism. However, efforts made over the past several decades have uncovered a few generally accepted mechanisms. Here, we explain the 1/f noise through a weighted sum of stochastic processes, characterized by Lorentzian spectra (bounded simple random walks). Our physical examples include a class of sandpile models of self-organized criticality.
