Abstract

For various distillation processes, thermodynamic feasibility analysis is the first step. For extractive distillation, the focus is often on selecting a suitable entrainer, and for this process, the residue curve map is an important tool. However, most of the studies have empirically selected the entrainer in advance, which means that the selected entrainer is not necessarily the optimal solution for unknown or more complex systems. In this paper, the methanol/water/tetrahydrofuran/n-butanol system, which contains three binary azeotropes and is a link in the production process of 1,4-butanediol, has been selected for study. The feasibility of the entrainer was determined using residue curve map. Modeling of extractive distillation process with application of selected entrainer reveals a certain energy saving with respect to the pressure swing distillation mode. This study resulted in a practical program for determining the entrainer for extractive distillations containing multiple azeotropes, with an intuitive 3D graphical presentation of the screening process, for systems with "N+1" number of components.
