Preparing for the top: How AP program adoption impacts younger cohorts

Abstract

This paper uses administrative data to study the staggered rollout of AP programs in Jamaica. The analysis centers on the CSEC exam, the region’s standardized school-leaving assessment that determines both admission into AP programs and access to higher education. Using various staggered difference-in-differences estimators the results indicate that AP adoption increases the share of students’ attaining the highest possible discrete score and absenteeism, particularly at the highest-performing schools and in more demanding subjects. While program rollout had no impact on the number of exam registration and the pass rate, the evidence suggests that the program increased university admission rates.
