Conservation of Resources Theory: A new theory for the resident attitude literature

Abstract

•Conservation of Resources Theory introduced to the resident attitude literature.•Theory explains how threats to valued resources create stress for residents.•This stress over resource loss leads to animosity and opposition to tourism.•Resource loss spirals covered where vulnerable communities can't cope with tourism.•‘Resource caravans’ covered, which shows some communities can be more resilient.
