Abstract

The German construction sector was again marked by a strong downturn last year. In terms of construction spending, the downturn will worsen in 2001 and will still continue in 2002. Developments in the construction sector in west and east Germany show marked differences. According to projections of the Ifo Institute, construction spending this year in west Germany will decline by nearly 4% and by about 1½% in 2002; in east Germany construction spending will fall by 10% this year and by ca. 4% next year. In Germany as a whole, construction investment will decline by 5½% this year and by 2% next year. Thus, the construction sector will continue to be a major retarding factor for the recovery process in the economy.
