Abstract

L'agglomŽration spatiale des firmes est un phŽnomne largement dŽbattu en Žconomie gŽographique. Cet article propose une nouvelle explication ˆ ce phŽnomne : les entreprises mettent en avant la localisation comme un moyen de signaler un bien nouveau. Accepter la concurrence en se localisant au plus prs des entreprises existantes permet de montrer aux consommateurs la valeur du produit vendu. La polarisation gŽographique, et par lˆ mme une plus grande concurrence, sert de faire-valoir ˆ une innovation. On montre que la firme innovante se localise dans la mme rŽgion que la firme concurrente uniquement si le produit qu'elle propose est suffisamment innovant. Le critre de raffinement "K-undefeated" assure l'unicitŽ de l'Žquilibre semi-sŽparateur. La polarisation de l'activitŽ est uniquement imÂputable ˆ l'asymŽtrie d'information. Cette forte polarisation doit inciter les autoritŽs supra-rŽgionales ˆ privilŽgier plut™t les infrastructures de dŽsen-clavement qui se traduisent par une forte baisse des cožts de transport. En effet, une faible baisse du cožt de transport peut se traduire par une baisse du bien-tre total.
