Abastecimiento y costos de transacción en los mercados de alimentos de las principales ciudades de Colombia

Abstract

En este estudio exploramos el grado de integración de los mercados de alimentos agrícolas en Colombia. Nos concentramos en el comportamiento de los mercados de arroz, cebolla, papa, tomate, frijol, yuca y plátano. Caracterizamos la estructura de las redes de abastecimiento de estos alimentos hacia Bogotá Medellín y Cali, y calculamos una medida de los costos de transacción entre estas ciudades y sus potenciales proveedores, mediante la estimación de un modelo Autorregresivo de Umbral con series semanales de precios. Nuestros resultados sugieren que los mercados de estos productos se encuentran integrados, con una vida media de los choques de precios de tres semanas. Unas pocas regiones del país tienen participaciones importantes en el abastecimiento hacia las tres ciudades principales, sobre todo en los productos menos perecederos como la papa y el arroz. No obstante, se observan costos de transacción sustanciales que alcanzan en promedio 42 por ciento del precio de estos productos en el mercado de origen. **** ABSTRACT: In this paper, we explore the degree of market integration for a set of agricultural food products in Colombia. We estimate a measure of transaction costs across wholesale markets using a Threshold Autoregressive (TAR) model. We focus on studying the exchange of rice, onion, potato, yucca, plantain, and red beans between potential regions of production and Bogot´a, Medell´ın, and Cali. Also, we describe the structure of the supply networks for these goods. Our results suggest that there is market integration, with an average half-life of shocks to price differentials of three weeks. A few regions in the country produce large shares of total supply in the three main cities; this market concentration is particularly strong for the least perishable products, such as potatoes and rice. Nonetheless, there are substantial transaction costs that reach, on average, 42 percent of prices in source markets.
