Abstract

RESUMEN Este estudio aborda la evolución de la deuda externa de Ecuador, su sostenibilidad y los riesgos asociados con un posible default, en un contexto global caracterizado por un creciente nivel de endeudamiento. A través de un enfoque metodológico mixto, que integra tanto métodos cuantitativos como cualitativos, se analizan las principales tendencias en la deuda externa de Ecuador, sus proyecciones futuras y las políticas fiscales implementadas para mitigar los riesgos. Los resultados indican que la deuda externa del país ha aumentado considerablemente en los últimos años, principalmente debido a la dependencia de financiamiento externo y al alza de los tipos de interés globales, lo que ha incrementado los costos de servicio de la deuda. Mediante el uso de modelos econométricos, se proyecta que la deuda podría superar niveles insostenibles en el futuro cercano, a menos que se adopten reformas fiscales profundas y una reestructuración de la deuda. Además, el estudio explora las posibles repercusiones socioeconómicas de un default, sugiriendo que, si bien las políticas de ajuste fiscal son necesarias para controlar la deuda, podrían tener efectos negativos sobre el crecimiento económico, la pobreza y la desigualdad, especialmente si no se diseñan de manera cuidadosa. Finalmente, el estudio ofrece recomendaciones basadas en experiencias internacionales y las pautas del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) para evitar el default, proponiendo soluciones tanto a nivel fiscal como en términos de gestión de la deuda.
