Organizing in the informal economy : a case study of the municipal waste management industry in South Africa

Abstract

Examines features of the municipal waste management sector in South Africa, including the legal and policy context, and describes conditions of work and collective barraging arrangements. Provides an overview of worker and employer organizations and sets out a strategy for organizing waste management workers affected by externalization and informalization and for improving conditions of work in the sector.
