Participation in global value chains as a vehicle for SME upgrading : a literature review

Abstract

Examines the possibilities that participation in global value chains can provide to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for opening up new markets, encouraging modernization, and in accessing information on quality standards and market trends. Analyses relevant literature on value chains and discusses links between transnational corporations (TNCs) and SMEs in developing countries.
