Abstract

This article explores efforts to institutionalize social responsibility within higher education institutions, based on a qualitative study conducted with fourteen French universities and grandes écoles with the DD&RS label (sustainable development and social and environmental responsibility). Through content analysis of interviews, this research reveals the dynamic nature of the institutional work required for effective USR integration, encompassing structural, conceptual, operational, relational, emotional, and extra-institutional elements. The study highlights the pivotal role of relational and emotional work in overcoming resistance to change, as well as the importance of extra-institutional work in enhancing the visibility of social responsibility initiatives. By offering an integrated vision of institutional commitment to USR, this article contributes to rethinking strategies for integrating social responsibility into higher education institutions.
