Abstract

This research investigates how different sustainable behaviors influence the internationalization strategies and market selection of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In light of the growing significance of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in international business, this study explores the paradoxes faced by SMEs as they balance economic growth with social and environmental responsibilities during international expansion. Using an exploratory qualitative approach, based on semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs and support providers experts, the research delves into how entrepreneurial orientation to sustainability shape decision-making in international contexts. The findings reveal diverse sustainability behaviors, from singular oriented to holistic approaches, and their influence on international market selection, market entry mode and operational strategies, such as efficient production and supply chain, to mitigate environmental impact practices. By examining the tensions between adhering to ethical sustainability standards and competing in international markets with varying regulatory environments, this study contributes to the understanding of how SMEs can navigate these contradictions. The results advocate for a more nuanced approach to sustainable internationalization, emphasizing purpose-driven entrepreneurship as a critical driver to target both performance and responsible international growth.
