Abstract

The Russians were thus hardly ever trained in the market economy and the extensive growth model of the USSR did not favour either the dynamism of enterprise or the possible substitution of factors of production, both in the civil and military spheres. Russia has embarked on the transition to a market economy. In this article, several renowned economists (Intriligator (UCLA), Goldman (Garvard), Fischer (IMF), Menshikov (Erasmus University), Desai (Columbia), Braguinsky (Yokohama), Coulomb, Fontanel and Samson (Grenoble), as well as Ygor Gaïdar, Prime Minister of Russia and initiator of the shock therapy, present their analyses of the success of the transition. The economic crisis is characterised by a considerable human cost and the reforms are progressing, with many perverse effects that are undermining the growth of democracy to the benefit of either an authoritarian political system or a plutocracy.
