Analysing willingness of smallholder broiler farmers to pay for an egg incubator in Ga Mphahlele, Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality of Limpopo

Abstract

Broiler chickens provide human with cheapest source of protein. On the other hand, the broiler farmers in Ga Mphahlele are suppressed by demand during Easter holidays and month end and they end up running out of stock. Use of egg incubator can assist the smallholder broiler farmers in Ga Mphahlele to hatch their own day-old chickens. This study was aimed at analyzing willingness of smallholder broiler farmers in Ga Mphahlele, Lepelle-Nkumpi municipality of Limpopo to pay for an egg incubator. An online and face to face questionnaire was used to collect data from 52 farmers by use of snowball sampling method. Descriptive statistics, Likert scale survey and Binary probit regression model were used to address objectives of the study. The study revealed that 58% out of 51 farmers who participated in this study are willing to pay for the egg incubator, it further revealed that the farmers who have low level of education are willing to pay for the incubator. Education level, gender and age were found negatively significant at 1%, 5% and 10% respectively while farming experience was positively significant at 10% level in analysing willingness of Ga Mphahlele broiler farmers to pay for an egg incubator. The study recommends that, people with high level of education should come in board and participate in farming of broiler chickens to assist those farmers who are willing to pay for the egg incubator to manoeuvre around the system of an incubator.
