Abstract

Die Globalisierung beeinflusst die Entwicklung von Städten und Regionen. Vor allem eine gute Erreichbarkeit von Städten und Regionen, wie auch die Erreichbarkeit anderer Zentren aus diesen Regionen und Städten spielen eine große Rolle. In der deutschen Raumordnung wird diese Anforderung durch die Diskussion der metropolitanen Gatewayfunktion aufgegriffen und vor allem durch Infrastrukturstandorte operationalisiert. In diesem Beitrag wird auf Grundlage des Ansatzes von Castells eine Erweiterung des Verständnisses der Gatewayfunktion vorgeschlagen. Auf der Grundlage von Castells' Differenzierung zwischen unterschiedlichen layers of flows wird die Bedeutung einer Trennung von Infrastruktur und sozioökonomischen Austauschprozessen in den Fokus gerückt, um ein umfassendes Verständnis von Städten als Knoten zu diskutieren.
