Abstract

A definitive gap exists in the current literature on roadmaps regarding the implementation and sustainability of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) in the public sector context. Although there are some roadmaps available in the literature on operational excellence (OPEX), there is an absence of empirical evidence referencing validating such roadmaps. The objective of this chapter is to present a practical roadmap which helps public sector organisations in the successful deployment of OPEX. Whilst not all improvement projects should end up in Lean or Six Sigma, the authors also provide some guidelines for the characteristics of projects followed by different types of OPEX methodologies for the execution of such projects. These guidelines can be very helpful in choosing the appropriate OPEX methodology or strategy for tackling problems of varied complexity.
