Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy is a critical skill that complements teaching and learning in higher education. Due to the emergence of AI technologies, the education sector has witnessed profound changes in teaching, learning, and research. This chapter sought to establish the preparedness of Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) in terms of the promotion of AI literacy competency skills. The study is anchored on the Framework of AI literacy by Hibbert et al. (2024), the four-dimensional AI literacy framework by Wang et al. (2023), and the framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education (ACRL, 2016). A qualitative research approach using multiple case study research design was adopted. Purposive sampling was used to identify 16 research-intensive (R1) HLIs in the United States of America as per the Carnegie Classification 2023 and four Chartered Universities in Kenya with ongoing activities toward building the capacity for information literacy skills. A desktop review was employed to collect secondary data using an observation guide. Content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data.
