Abstract

Since training is generally considered to be necessary for productivity and competitiveness, an important research question is what economic factors cause a greater incidence of training in the labour force? While there is a large body of empirical literature on this question (see the reviews in OECD 1991, Lynch, 1994, and Booth and Snower, (1995), most of these works are based on national data and comparative work is scarce (Pischke, 2000).
