Science Parks and Business Incubation in the United Kingdom: Evidence from University Spin-Offs and Staff Start-Ups

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to fill the theoretical and empirical gaps in the literature, by providing the quantitative evidence on the effect of science parks and business incubators on university entrepreneurial outcomes in the United Kingdom during 2009–2016 for 131 public universities. An important dimension of our analysis is that we empirically demonstrate that science parks and incubators, and in particular on campus, are able to enhance entrepreneurship outcomes at university and their ability to assist new ventures created by university professors (start-ups) and using university technology (spin-offs). Several implications of this study are offered to policy makers, science park managers, and entrepreneurs in this chapter.
