Structural and process dimension in innovation orientation

Abstract

To initiate and stimulate innovation in business services requires a good understanding of the processes that operate within an organisation. The discussion of four predominant theories related to innovation research begins this chapter, namely ambidextrous theory, contingency theory, dual-core and resource-based theory. The authors point out how these theories and structure’s attributes are related to the study of the innovation process. The innovation orientation must emphasise characteristics of an organisational structure such as professionalism and specialisation. In this chapter, authors discuss the leading role of flexible organisation concepts including adhocracy, ambidextrous and hypertext (including virtual) organisations. Noteworthy throughout the discussion is also the concept of dynamic capabilities involving innovation that generates current knowledge and novel services. Modern business services seem to benefit from implementing service design principles - in particular design thinking. This chapter addresses the most important issues related to the structural and process dimension in innovation orientation.
