Abstract

Statistiken sind zunächst lediglich systematische Anordnungen von Zahlen. Sie bedürfen der Interpretation und haben inhärente Grenzen, wenn es darum geht, soziale Phänomene zu begreifen. Arbeitskämpfe sind in dieser Hinsicht keine Ausnahme. Zugleich gilt, dass ohne annähernd verlässliche Streikdaten eine umfassende Arbeitskampfforschung erschwert und stattdessen Spekulation und Mystifizierung der Boden bereitet wird. Am Beispiel der statistischen Erfassung und Auswertung von Streiks in Deutschland wird gezeigt, wie schwierig es jedoch ist, eine umfassende Arbeitskampfstatistik zu erstellen. Untersucht und diskutiert werden die sich stellenden Probleme am Beispiel der amtlichen Streikstatistik der Bundesagentur für Arbeit sowie der 2008 als alternative Datensammlung etablierten Arbeitskampfschätzung des WSI. Die Studie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass beide Quellen ihre je eigenen Stärken und Schwächen haben und weitere Verbesserungen der quantitativen Erfassung von Arbeitskämpfen aus Sicht der Streikforschung wünschenswert wären.
