Abstract

“Son inherits father’s business†remains the predominant mode of intergenerational inheritance within family businesses. The identification and cultivation of successor competencies are particularly crucial for the survival and sustainable development of these enterprises. This paper gathers textual data through a large-scale distribution of open-ended questionnaires, supplemented by in-depth interviews with founders of family businesses. Subsequently, we systematically encode and analyse this textual data using grounded theory. Ultimately, this paper constructs a “4E†competency model for successors, which encompasses four key competency elements: Education, Experience, Exploration and Entrepreneurship.
