Abstract

Assertivness represents the central theme of my research. The concept of assertivness was introduced by Wople and Lazarus and it has been defined in various ways. According to Rimm and Masters, assertiveness is an interpersonal behavior involving the honest and relatively straightforward experssion of feelings. The notion of assertiveness was introduced by behavioral therapy specialists who claimed that assertive behavior inhibits anxiety and reduces depression. Assertive behavior is halfway between aggressive behavior and passive behavior. To show the impact of assertive behavior in our society and in every individuals life I conducted a psychological research.The central hypothesis is that there is a positive correlation between the level of assertivness and the level of self-esteem. This research involved group of 30 persons and two personality tests. I used the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and my own research instrument to test assertivness. The hypothesis was confirmed after the statistical analysis. Conclusively, the assertivness level of an individual is proportional with the level of self-esteem. Also, an ongoing research is the correlation between the level of assertiveness and anxiety levels, being presumed that there is a negative correlation between the two.
