Abstract

The importance of the psychotherapist's personality in triggering and maintaining change in psychotherapy has long been an idea stated by great practitioners in the field of psychotherapy. However, the serious study of science of this empirical finding has appeared only in the last two or three decades. One of the explanations for this "delay" is the separatist and rival evolution of each school of psychotherapy that had direct consequences on the topics addressed in scientific research. The concern to demonstrate the effectiveness of each form of therapy was a priority and implicitly eliminated important issues. The return to the comprehensive scientific study of the personality of the psychotherapist took place slowly, over approximately 70 years of research. We further present the important moments in the scientific research of psychotherapy, the stage it is currently in and also the theoretical evolution of this The shift from the effectiveness of psychotherapy to its effectiveness as well as the consequent emergence of integrative psychotherapy have allowed theorists, practitioners and researchers to bring to the fore aspects previously ignored in the psychotherapeutic process.
