Reflections on the institutionalization process of scientific research in Latin America: the case of Cinvestav

Abstract

Consolidation of the scientific activity in Latin American research centers has been a matter of serious concern in recent years. In the present study we use a data set of the WoS files in order to explore the consolidation process of the research activity of the Physics Departament of Cinvestav in Mexico City during the last 60 years. Our findings indicate a clear difference between its early research output and impact and the respective data in recent years which has been enhanced mainly by the opening of new research lines. While this trend suggests a solid consolidation process of its research activity, there are some Latin American research centers that have experienced difficulties in pursuing their scientific activities during this period.
