The Spread of Mafia in Northern Italy: The Role of Public Infrastructure

Abstract

This paper analyzes the spread of mafia in Northern Italy. In particular this study aims at showing that public funding of infrastructure attracts the transplantation of such criminal organizations. I assemble a new dataset on mafia-related crimes, which provide information at provincial level over the period 1985-2010. By applying a differences-indifferences strategy, I show that public investment for renewal of A4 motorway increased mafia-related crimes with economic connotation in those provinces that received roadwork.
