Experimental demonstration of chaos in a microbial food web

Abstract

It's chaos out there There is intense debate on the extent to which the behaviour of natural systems is chaotic. Epidemics, heart attacks and food web interactions display chaotic dynamics, but a real-life experimental tool with which to study the role of chaos has been elusive. Now a continuous culture system containing a protozoan predator and two coexisting prey bacteria has been developed for the analysis of the different facets of behaviour on the edge of chaos.
