On the Impact of the Pandemic on Test Scores: Evidence from Argentina

Abstract

We examine exceptionally rich data from APRENDER standardised Argentine tests to capture the potential influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on primary school performance, disentangling the effect of school closures and subsequent reopening. Combining student and head staff surveys, panel data at the school level allows us to track learning records for 2016, 2018, and 2021. Our results show that, in spite of an important test score decline in 2021, test score data do not display a significant influence in not in-class instruction extension during 2021 (considering remote instruction throughout 2020 for all schools). Using a quasi-experimental (difference-in-differences) approach, we find that schools that remained closed do not present significant average score differences with those that reopen in 2021.
