Abstract

The paper analyses the family firm through the set of companies under the control of a family, instead of limiting the research to the listed companies, as commonly done in literature. The paper describes 103 family business groups belonging to the IEF, Instituto de la Empresa Familiar. Firstly, the organization structure of the mentioned business groups is analysed. Secondly the way in which the families organise control and management of the companies is analysed both in terms of the business group as a whole and in terms of family ties. We perform this descriptive analysis by looking at the compositions of the board of directors of nearly 4000 firms.
