Nonlinear optics in composites and in heterogeneous media

Abstract

Heterogeneous media have recently been considered as potential nonlinear materials for applications of the optical Kerr effect in the optoelectronics domain. Composites may show an enhanced nonlinear response either from the local field effect or from quantum confinement or, ideally, from both. The present status of research in this domain is discussed for metal colloids, semiconductor-doped glasses, intrinsic bistability and laser-induced transparency.
