Abstract

Using panel data from 31 provincial-level administrative regions in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) for 2013–2023, this paper empirically examines the relationships among financial risk supervision, corruption and embezzlement crime, and the scale of shadow banking. The findings indicate: financial risk supervision significantly curbs the regional scale of shadow banking; corruption and embezzlement crime expand the scale of shadow banking; corruption and embezzlement crime play a mediating role in the relationship between financial risk supervision and the scale of shadow banking; the impact of financial risk supervision on the scale of shadow banking is heterogeneous between high- and low-population-density areas; the impact of corruption and embezzlement crime on the scale of shadow banking exhibits heterogeneity across the eastern, central, and western regions.
