A phosphoric acid fuel cell coupled with biogas

Abstract

During the last decade, advances in phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) technology have brought this system almost to commercial status. The PAFC systems are intended for use with oxygen from ambient air and relatively clean hydrogen from reformed fuels such as light distillates, methanol and natural gas. In this paper, the techno-economic feasibility of a PAFC coupled with biogas is examined. Mass and energy balances for the system have been computed. It is shown that the PAFC stack price should be <$1000/kW to produce electricity at a price comparable to supply from the grid or other on-site options.
